Anatomy

Anatomy of a Slow Shopify Store

Most slow Shopify stores are slow for the same handful of reasons. Here's what we usually find in an audit, and what we do about it.

01 · App Bloat

Too many apps

The Problem

Each app injects its own scripts and network requests, and stacking up 20+ slows every page.

✓ What we do

Audit each app's real cost; remove or replace the heaviest.

02 · Code Residue

Ghost code from removed apps

The Problem

Uninstalling an app rarely removes its code; leftover snippets keep loading for months.

✓ What we do

Track down and clear the orphaned code safely.

03 · Asset Weight

Heavy hero images

The Problem

Oversized, unoptimised images delay the largest content and push LCP over the limit.

✓ What we do

WebP/AVIF, correct sizing, and preload the LCP image.

04 · Render Block

Render-blocking scripts & CSS

The Problem

Scripts and styles that block the first paint make the page feel frozen on load.

✓ What we do

Defer non-critical JS and inline the critical CSS.

05 · DOM & Liquid

Bloated Liquid & DOM

The Problem

Overbuilt templates and deep markup slow rendering on every request.

✓ What we do

Refactor Liquid, trim the DOM, cut render overhead.

06 · Third-Party

Piled-up third-party tags

The Problem

Chat widgets, pixels and analytics quietly add weight and hurt INP.

✓ What we do

Load them efficiently, or not on every page.

Core Web Vitals

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are the three metrics Google uses to measure real-world page experience: loading speed (LCP), interactivity (INP) and visual stability (CLS). A store "passes" when all three are in the green for real users.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
How quickly the main content of the page becomes visible.
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)
How quickly the page responds after a shopper taps or clicks.
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)
How stable the layout stays while the page loads (no jumping elements).
Metric Good Needs improvement Poor
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) ≤ 2.5s 2.5s to 4s > 4s
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) ≤ 200ms 200ms to 500ms > 500ms
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) ≤ 0.1 0.1 to 0.25 > 0.25

Thresholds: Google (web.dev / Core Web Vitals).

Business Impact

Does site speed really affect sales?

Yes. Faster stores convert better and rank better, especially on mobile. Google reports that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes longer than three seconds to load, and Shopify's store-speed research links faster load times to higher conversion.

Engineering Scope

What we do

Performance Audit & Diagnostics

We start by measuring: Lighthouse and PageSpeed, Core Web Vitals, apps, third-party scripts and theme code. You get a clear, prioritised picture of what's slow and what it's costing you, before anyone touches a line of code.

Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP, CLS

We fix the three things Google and your shoppers actually feel: how fast the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page responds to a tap (INP), and how stable it stays while it loads (CLS).

Before / After You Can Verify

Every engagement ends with a before/after report and a live PageSpeed link. You see the improvement for yourself, not a dashboard only we can read.

Ongoing Monitoring

Speed creeps back as apps and content pile up. Optional monitoring watches your Core Web Vitals so small regressions get caught before they start costing you orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a Shopify speed audit?
We review your Core Web Vitals, PageSpeed results, apps, theme code, images and third-party scripts. The report identifies the main bottlenecks and prioritises the changes likely to make the biggest difference.
Which Core Web Vitals do you work on?
We investigate LCP (how quickly the main content appears), INP (how quickly the store responds to interactions) and CLS (how stable the layout is). The work depends on which of these metrics and underlying resources are causing problems for your store.
How will I know whether the work improved my store?
We measure performance before and after the changes and provide a report you can review. We also share a PageSpeed link, so you can check the results yourself.
Do you need access to my Shopify admin for the initial audit?
No admin access is needed to start the initial speed audit. Send us your store URL and an email address for the report; we will discuss any access needed for subsequent work separately.
Is a high PageSpeed score the same as a fast experience for shoppers?
Not always. A PageSpeed score is a useful diagnostic, but we also look at Core Web Vitals and what happens when people use the store, including loading, responsiveness and layout stability.
